Seasonal Workers

 Horndean Young Roots Project 2011

During the summer of 2011, Horndean Parish Council worked with local young people from a variety of different backgrounds to improve its nature reserves. Thanks to funding from the Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund, two training courses were hosted by the BTCV in environmental conservation and boardwalk construction. Trainees were then involved with the construction of two boardwalks on Dell Piece West, as well as new perimeter fencing. This project was aimed at educating young people in the importance of nature reserves and wildlife conservation, providing them with valuable work experience and enhancing our green open spaces for the benefit of the local community.

“I have made loads of friends and it’s good to be working in the sun and good exercise” Luke, aged 15
“I have learnt that nature reserves are key to the countryside because they sometimes have specific species of flowers, insects and animals” Sheldon, aged 17
“I have learnt that a lot of work has to be done to keep habitats intact” Ben, aged 15
“I have enjoyed working with different people and helping the local community” Matt, aged 18
“Team building will be very useful in future jobs and in any team situation” Stuart, aged 15
