Horndean Countryside Team

Those of us that live or work or go to school in Horndean are very lucky.

Horndean Countryside TeamThe Parish council owns and manages almost 130 acres of open countryside and nearly 30 acres of park land, with other smaller grassed recreational areas. There are many countryside nature reserves and they include large areas of lowland heathland, chalk downland, semi-natural ancient woodland and wet bog. Horndean's parks boast a wide range of children's play equipment as well as large areas of open grassland for general recreation.

On our doorstep we have some beautiful areas of countryside, including four Local Nature Reserves, and one Site of Special Scientific Interest. They are easily accessible and are fantastic resources for getting closer to nature and our native wildlife. We also try to ensure our parks are maximised for their wildlife interest.

Horndean Parish Council Countryside Team

Horndean Parish Council has been managing open space for some years and appointed its first Countryside Ranger in 1995.

Today the Countryside Team consists of three full time staff aided by volunteers, school children undertaking life skills elements of the National Curriculum and students studying countryside related disciplines.

The team has a much-varied role. Our general site maintenance work includes keeping 25 acres of grass continually short and approximately a mile of hedges under control. Litter picking is carried out daily and maintenance of infrastructure and assets is ongoing. We also carry out habitat management work, give advice to local residents, offer guided walks and events, manage the parish rights of way network and grow trees to plant into the countryside.

For more information on any local countryside issues, events or activities, please contact The Countryside Team telephone 023-9259-7766 or email us:
